Studio 8 and 9 – The Caretakers Apartment
The apartment, stairwell and twin hallway were one set and built on Stage 8 and 9.
Although Stage 8 and 9 are separate Stages, it is still a continuous set.
Stage 9 has production rooms overlooking the floor.
Fantastic help was the floor plan from the BBC studioworks. It turned out that the drawings I had calculated so far were not quite right. After some adjustments, the Caretakers set fits almost exactly.
View from Stage 9 to the apartment. On the ground floor you can see a corridor leading to Stage 8.
To the left and right are stairwells. Not quite finished yet.
This is fascinating! I’m just getting my head around this. I run a website on the history of film and TV studios and also worked often at Elstree in recent years as a lighting director. I had no idea the set for the flat was actually in the TV control room area. I assumed it was on stage 9. However, this means that the famous ‘Here’s Johnny’ scene was filmed in what became the lighting gallery – so just where I sat on many occasions while working on TV shows. Mind blown!
